Dominic Dyer named 2017 William A. Dart Memorial Scholarship Recipient

Dart’s 2017 Minds Inspired William A. Dart Memorial Scholarship recipient is Dominic Dyer.

Selected from a group of nearly 40 applicants, Dominic is headed to New York City this September and will be studying Economics at the prestigious Columbia University in New York City.

Mark VanDevelde, Chief Executive Officer for Dart Enterprises Ltd. welcomed Dominic: “I am inspired daily by all of our Minds Inspired scholars. Their focus on success at such a young age is admirable, especially in Dominic’s case, as he demonstrated extraordinary time-management and prioritization skills. Even as he studied and excelled academically, Dominic – an accomplished athlete - maintained a rigorous training schedule, emerged as a student leader at school and participated in a number of philanthropic activities. These skills will serve him well as he balances his academic and athletic aspirations throughout college and later in his chosen career.”

Dominic recently completed his A-levels at Cayman Prep and High School where he was an active member of the Student Council, and was President in his last year; was Deputy Head Boy, leading a team of prefects and managing school assemblies; and was House Captain during his last two years.

Moving from the classroom to the track, Dominic is a gifted athlete, most recently winning gold and bronze medals at the 2017 CARIFTA Games in April for his performance in the 5000 metre and 1500 metre events respectively. Cayman Prep and High School recognised Dominic as their 2017 Athlete of the year.

In his free time, Dominic volunteers for Race Caribbean and assists with the administration of long-distance race events held in Grand Cayman. He also enjoys donating time to Cayman’s ARK and the 345 Athletic Club.

Dominic’s choice of Columbia University (an Ivy League institution) combines his passion for academic and athletic excellence. Columbia boasts one of the top ten economics programmes in the world, as well as a strong middle-distance running programme. The William A. Dart Memorial Scholarship, valued at up to US$40,000 is awarded annually to a Caymanian student who demonstrates academic excellence and is well-rounded in extra-curricular activities. The scholarship is now in its sixth year.
